Historic Thunderbird Lodge

Thunderbird Lodge is an Arts & Crafts treasure built in one of the few Arts & Crafts communities settled at the turn of the last century, in Rose Valley, PA.

Working with Seiler + Drury Architecture, SED Design was engaged to develop a plan to rehabilitate this landscape, restoring its historic charm and accommodating present uses.

Planning and design with the Museum and Centennial Foundation focused on circulation systems for entry, parking and pedestrians that would blend into the landscape to accommodate ever-growing museum visitor groups as well as a planned community trail. Handicap access, unmanaged stormwater and clutter were also issues.

The design addresses these landscape issues while highlighting wonderful site features including a sloping south lawn with views to a wet meadow and stone bridge, a charming springhouse, and a pergola/sundial/stone buttress progression of elements near the historic entrance. Restored woodlands frame and buffer the site.

Stay tuned to see new life breathed into this landscape as funding becomes available.
