The Green Roof Garden for the Boeing Corporation in St. Louis serves as an entrance plaza above underground portions of the building complex. The green roof transforms this important entry and public gathering place from a concrete slab to a place of aesthetic and environmental value.
A rich garden setting is created by gently deepening the green roof growth media as it moves out from the walk. This strategy provides opportunities for greater plant diversity. While the plants bring beauty and life to this previously sterile environment, they also absorb, filter and cool storm water runoff.
Recalling the context of the site, the serpentine entrance walk reflects the meandering Mississippi River, while the grid of the plaza paving reflects the urban and agrarian setting through which the river “flows.” Seating kiosks serve as light wells to allow natural light to enter underground portions of the building.
